Crucial's memory tool is only 50% accurate, so don't rely on that for serious purchasing I didn't see any motherboards that would support 16GB of ram.

So yes, the i absolutely loves lower voltage DDR3. And it will accept 4GB sticks also, no problems. You don't really need MHz memory.

socket 775 still alive in 2020?

Thanks for reading! It is very quiet, which is a must for me. It seems my hands are tied on RAM speed with this mobo, however, so that would remain. I mean, look how pretty it is! And even an i3 would put up a good fight against a Core 2 Quad while giving you upward room to upgrade to an i5 or i7 down the road. I came across one guide that explained something specific about my situation that I had been wondering about: Quote:. Moore's curves, I guess. Thanks for the tips guys. Hey, that feels sort of good, getting all that crap out of my head. I was dicking around inside my PC, removing the resistors that halve the fan speeds, and was looking at the RAM. Turns out DDR2 is so expensive it was pretty hard to justify as well. Honestly sinking money into LGA for gaming You definitely need more memory and that's pretty cheap, but given how bad even a Core i clobbers most Core 2 Duos Oddly enough, that's the Sandy Bridge I was just looking at today, the i Seems like it's basically half of the ik that Ars recommended in the March System Guide. They seem to only differ in clock speed. The X I've got is 2. Ars Legatus Legionis et Subscriptor. Regarding memory, I've heard you really only need 2 GB for gaming. Me want tasty tacos!

Hey all! Easiest upgrade would better cooling and oc your chip. LMK if this is ignorant. Moderator et Subscriptor. Posted: Thu Jul 21, pm. Thanks again for the answers guys! At that time, relegate the current system to the status of HTPC or "once proud warrior, now reduced to the role of That Server In the Corner," or sell it off.

Unfortunately, by the time you paid for it you'd be at least halfway to the cost of a solid i-series CPU with motherboard and DDR3. Around Christmas time or even a little latergo hog-wild and buy at least an i5, at least 4 gigs of DDR3, and a good motherboard. Like writing a diary. If you want to milk the system performance even further, remember that Core 2s run at their fastest when the RAM runs at some multiple of the FSB.

Still, I looked into my options without ditching the mobo. Two more lga775 ram of DDR2 wouldn't be a hilarious waste of money, but otherwise I'd hold off on anything too serious. Since the memory runs dual channel lga775 ram have to set fsb above before ddr slows you down. What should oly do? Suggested course of action: thunk in 2 more gigs of DDR2, then save your money for a while.

I downloaded CPU-Z. Or I could get a Xeon E About what the i5 in the March Hot Rod costs! Apparently LGA is dead.

Necessary best casino in north las vegas buffet remarkable think you'd see a big enough clock speed bump from one Core 2 Duo to another.

Switched em, and the WEI score jumped from 4. Lga775 ram straight to an i5 at some point in the future is probably a better bet - it's only going to be a couple hundred more, but it'll give you a new system that will last for a few years at least.

Mid lga775 ram at idle. Ars Tribunus Angusticlavius et Subscriptor. Haven't grokked these yet. The Xeon would be an abject waste of money for you, and probably wouldn't be perceptibly faster for most workloads.

This Just In! The only real answer is your poll's third choice, but it is poll fail because there is no taco choice.

Thanks for looking. Posted: Sun Jul 31, am. Last edited by oly on Thu Jul 21, pm. A high-clocked Core 2 Quad would be better, and newer games can take at least partial advantage of additional cores. Hope you can make sense of it!

There's nothing in the Core2 family that is going to be markedly faster than what you have. I've decided to go to 4GB and upgrade to a 64 bit OS anyway. Get an e processor. I'm assuming this is true and ignoring the quad cores. Well that's enough lga775 ram now.

I've heard over and over that 4 cores make no difference over 2 for gaming. The cores never got over 70c, but I switched it back anyway. Last I looked, Core 2 Quads where quite expensive new, to the point that they're very hard to recommend over an i5 that will also be quite a bit faster. I don't know if it would like being OC'ed longterm. Last edited by RobL on Fri Jul 22, am. Seems foolish when I'm not really a power user, idiot-proof settings or not. You could then reuse the cooler on you next build. That's good value, but way more than I could responsibly spend right now. This is what I'd do. Granted, some of these games are poorly optimized I overupgraded the video card, and it now seems bottlenecked in the RAM and CPU department. I came across one guide that explained something specific about my situation that I had been wondering about: Quote And I was lucky enough to find these two articles in a thread somewhere, one with benchmarks for different memory timings on the Core 2 Duo, and the other benchmark is of my exact RAM, conincidentally. The mobo supports With the RAM stuck at mhz, would it make a big difference? I read the memory section in the mobo manual for what must be the third time, and realized I had the 2 DIMMS in single-channel mode. It's starting to gel. A lot of games, while not maxing them out, can make use of more than 2 cores, and the trend is for that to increase, not decrease. I'd sell the whole thing and get a Sandy Bridge rig. My case runs very cool, but the CPU already reaches 69 C during gaming. If there's no such thing as a RAM upgrade besides the amount, I could try and track down two more sticks of the exact memory I have, but I also hear that might not bee a good idea. Well, one edit deserves another one! I don't know why you can't just buy the slower one and change the clock speed?
